Daphne & Bentley's New Home and Friends

Just wanted to let everyone know Daphne and Bentley are now in their new home and doing great. They get along very well with our other ridgebacks, Samson and Kyah (former rescue as well). As you can see in the pictures they are very comfortable with each other. Sam is now 14, so he does not have as much energy as the others, but he tries. The other three love running around the yard and running the fence line with the neighbor dogs too. They love going for walks/runs and rides in the car or just chilling in the yard or sleeping on their beds. It is funny to see reactions while walking them all or seeing all of them riding in the back of the SUV. As you can see in the pictures they look like one big happy family. The family is listed left to right in the SUV as Daphne, Bentley, Kyah and Samson.

Aka Stoney's lion around , he was one of a group of 9' that was rescued from Alabama . To North Carolina his foster mom Carol .. I couldn't wait to see what he do on the farm in Pa. That was 2 years and 2 months ago . He is ripping my heart apart for this short time of having him and I knew it might happen ,cause of most of his life in puppy mill . Any of his off springs out there you got a good one.. Stoney was smart ran with me all over the land free and never left my side . Had a week in a resort and showed off and even walked for paws for cancer .He got up to 110 lbs and his age ha ! that boy could run .. Every night when I would get into bed he would even come up to my face and smell me and press down on my cheek. he made you love him... There is no great pet then a rescue .. Need to says thanks to Allyn ,Amanda an R.R .. I love and miss my boy I even had it put in STONE . tina

Bloat Symptoms, close call

TJ went out to play too soon after eating. I was distracted and let him do his rough housing with Taylor. He came into the house and tried to dry heave for 20 minutes. I checked him, thinking he was choking and tried to help. He looked 'anxious' and almost frantic. I felt his stomach - it was taut - not bloated. I called vet. We decided to take no chances and went in for x-ray to check for gas in stomach and to see if twisted. After we got there I noted his stomach was softer and he'd quit dry heaving. Vet gave him peroxide and he finally vomited. My regular vet said in her mind (she is brilliant) he had a resolved 'bloat/torsion', which could have been life threatening.

Ridgebacks are lean, deep chested and because TJ is high strung, he is even more prone. So don't take any chances if you see these symptoms. You have as little as two hours to permanent damage or death. Usually surgery is the only answer after decompressing and then they often suture the gut to the abdominal wall.

Just so you'll be aware if you see similar symptoms. Now we do not allow major horse play and no running until nearly three hours after meals and now he gets three small meals a day and is not allowed to inhale water - he has often thrown up following ingesting too much water too fast.

Ridgeback Playdate Sept 2010

OK Everyone it's time for another RRUS Reunion/Playdate. Again we are scheduled to go to the Pensacola, Florida dog park on Sept 18th. The plans are to get there around 2 PM. We'd love to see as many former and current RRUS dogs as possible. So far we have Ridgebacks coming from AL, FL, NC, TX and MS!!! Should be a lot of fun. If you can't make it, no worries we'll be sure to post pictures for all to enjoy.

Ridgeback Rodeo 2010

A few Ridgeback fanciers from the South headed up to PA for the annual Ridgeback Rodeo. It also worked out that we were able to transport 2 RRUS foster dogs up from their surrendering home to their foster homes. Sherman and Kassan should be available for adoption soon- both are sweet, young males who just need a forever home!

Here's Kassan strapped in by his seat belt on the long drive from AL to KY where he met his foster mom.We joined many others from all over the USA and Canada at the game preserve in Amish country to try our hand at many different activities. If a Ridgeback can do it, you'll have the opportunity to try it. There was hunting, herding, agility, lure coursing, conformation, and Canine Good Citizen evaluations.

This is Belinda, Coleman, Logan, Roadie and me at the Lineville, PA spillway. We stopped to check it out. The dogs were a hit w/ the other tourists. One lady even had her picture made w/ the boys!

Here are some the activities that we did. Here's Coleman trying his hand at herding and tracking.
It was wonderful to see so many Ridgebacks in one place. The only place I can think that I have seen more is the RRCUS National Specialty. After the four days of fun, here's how we all felt!

I'd love to make it to the Ridgeback Rodeo every year. While there were a lot of show dogs, many were rescues too. Pedigree didn't matter at the Rodeo- it was all about the breed and having a good time. We had a blast and I would encourage anyone and everyone to attend.

And as a finally a shameless brag- Logan completed his Canine Good Citizen evaluation and also earned his Herding Instinct Certification. So he went to PA as just Logan and came home w/ CGC, HIC behind his name. He is now caught up w/ his brother, Roadie who has the CGC and TDI titles.

TJ and Taylorsue are finally getting a new home. Can't believe it - at our age buying a new (to be built) home because it has a huge back yard. These two have been putting up with a small back yard on a golf course lot. We've just recently added the side yard to their running space, but it is nothing compared to the yard they are getting and deserve. TJ loves to run and probably would love coursing (is that the word). They love their walk but this neighborhood is full of retireds with tiny little dog-oids and they think TJ and Taylor are all kinds of things - too big!!! They are both under 50 lbs. We should get a purebred male and let them know what a real Ridgeback is size wise.

I bought the ultrasonic bark stop thing and have used it three times. Now all I have to do is show it to TJ and he comes right to me. They don't bark, but TJs pulling was still a bit of a problem, but he is much improved. This gadget is good for emergencies if some aggressive owner lets their dog off leash and they charge mine for instance. This has happened and one tried to bite TJ. Now mine get their hackles up and their growls going (only at the dog who tried to attack TJ, so having this device might help.

We can hardly wait to set them 'free'.

A Trip to the Beach

Tori and I met up with a friend and visited the beach this morning. A lot of fun was had by the RR as they romped, played, ran in the surf, sniffed various bits of things on the beach, etc. And the two humans had fun watching them, talking and taking photos. Mom took me to a new dog park today. We had never been there before as it's a bit far from where we live. But it's really close to where one of her friends lives so we decided to meet there today for some fun! Mom's friend brought his female Great Dane and she and I ran all over the place and met all sorts of neat people and dogs. We even met a Ridgeback on our way out! Lilly's new home

I am planning to leave the radio on and give her a kong w/frozen peanut butter, but according to my video of today's short trip, she is too upset to enjoy it...She is great when I'm around, but unfortunately, I do have to work...

My ball!

Some of you may know what this ball is. For those of you who don't, it has a hole in it and the idea is to put some treats in it and the dog then rolls it around to get the treats to fall out.
Well, my other ridgie Tessa, is really good at getting the treats to fall out. She has developed a strategy and has the perseverance to keep at it to the very end. She then usually proceeds to steal Zuri's ball from her because Zuri just doesn't have the same luck or whatever it takes to make it work as well as Tessa.

But that one night, Zuri decided that NO! Tessa was not going to steal the ball from her. She was just going to lie there protecting the ball even though she knew that there were still treats in it. Occasionally she would nudge it so that it would almost fall off the futon but then she would save it from falling with her paw. It was quite funny to watch.

Florida's Spring Fun Day

The Sunshine State Rhodesian Ridgeback Club just announced their Spring event- Fun Day will be held in March. Not sure how many RRUS adopters live in Florida but these events are fun. I took Roadie and Logan to the event last fall. Everyone had a blast. This is a great way to show off your rescue dogs!

Trip to the "Dog" Park

Harley, Roadie, and Logan headed to the dog park this afternoon to stretch their legs . Well there is NOT an official dog park in town. But on Sunday afternoon, everyone brings their dogs to the baseball fields. All the fields were filled w/ groups of dogs. The local Greyhound rescue group had reserved one of the fields. We asked if they would allow other sight hounds inside. They agreed. Some of the people had never seen a Ridgeback in the flesh, only in pictures.

After a proper introduction to one another, the sight hounds took to running all over the field like a pack on a mission.

I hope we can get together again- maybe I'll get some better pictures.

Mountain day hike with Hannah and Cheever

Hi, everyone,

Took in a New Year's Day hike with Hannah and Cheever today. They got to play in the mud, swim in the mud, and carry mud into my car and house. And the foothills were pretty dry, too!

The dogs had a good time. I only hiked about 3.5 miles, but they ran circles around me most of the time, chased some ground squirrels, and got to run up and down some 50 to 60-degree bedrock and dirt slopes. They're, not surprisingly, asleep now.

In other great news, Hannah's ringworm bald spot is almost gone. It's amazing how long its taken for the fur to grow back, but it's about 15% of its original size. She lost that fur back in August.

R.I.P Sweet Curtis

R.I. P. Sweet Boy. Curtis came into our lives 3 years ago through Ridgeback Rescue of the US when we picked him up from Evelyn, his foster Mom in TN. We never felt that we rescued him, rather, he brought us joy and love. He was the steady calm in our house. A gentle soul who was always happy. From the first instant it was ...as if he had always been with us and as if he and Morgan were long lost friends. He spent the ride home from TN with his head resting on Morgan and that bond never failed in the 4 years they were together. Curtis never met a stranger. He loved everyone young and old and he graced our lives with happiness. His tail was always wagging. He would wag his tail to lay down, happy to have a soft place to lay. When he was really happy, he would purr. As a foster brother, he was the secure presence. He taught the young ones respect with a firm but kind manner. He showed the scared mill dogs tenderness. He coaxed the timid ones to play with his silliness. He protected them all if there was a threat. Curtis was a once in a lifetime dog who didn't ask for much but gave so much to all of us. He was taken too soon but we will always be grateful for the time he was allowed grace our lives. Run free sweet boy. Until we meet again

Here's Amali's Holiday Update:

Needless to say the girls were not pleased with their Christmas wear,
and asked if a hot line call would be in order as "mom made us do this".
Amali was the smart one, each time that I had them setting at the tree ready
to take the picture, Amali would tilt her head forward to make the antlers
fall off. Oh well!!

Not much going on other than the girls and I are getting cabin fever, and
counting the days until Spring.

Hannah Update

Hi, everyone,

Here are a few new photos of Hannah and Cheever. Photo Hannah 192 shows her ringworm bald spot. The fur hasn't grown back yet. I'm beginning to suspect it might not. The ringworm was really deep in places, especially the big bald spot on her flank.

But she and Cheever are doing well and enjoying the weather here in the Bay Area and the change to visit new places like Point Isabel.

This Weekend in FL

We just got home from our weekend in SUNNY (and still very steamy) Florida! RRUS was well represented w/ 2 former foster dogs and 2 current foster dogs attending the event. Everyone had a great time. Here are some pics of the pups after we got back-

The highlight of the weekend was a Mastiff named Batista who showed the sighthounds that they aren't the only dogs who can lure course. I wish I had a picture but I was too busy trying to get Logan to stop trying to chase the "bunny" w/ Batista.

It was a very fun weekend for both humans and dogs.

Adoption: a New Leash on Life

I am sure many have seen this story. If you have, it's worth reading again. If you haven't, be prepared to be touched. Each of us belongs to this blog because we opened our hearts and homes to give a dog a second chance at forever.

They told me the big black Lab's name was Reggie as I looked at him lying in his pen. the shelter was clean, no-kill, and the people really friendly. I'd only been in the area for six months, but everywhere I went in the small college town, people were welcoming and open. Everyone waves when you pass them on the street.
But something was still missing as I attempted to settle in to my new life here, and I thought a dog couldn't hurt. Give me someone to talk to. And I had just seen Reggie's advertisement on the local news. The shelter said they had received numerous calls right after, but they said the people who had come down to see him just didn't look like "Lab people," whatever that meant. They must've thought I did.
But at first, I thought the shelter had misjudged me in giving me Reggie and his things, which consisted of a dog pad, bag of toys almost all of which were brand new tennis balls, his dishes, and a sealed letter from his previous owner. See, Reggie and I didn't really hit it off when we got home. We struggled for two weeks (which is how long the shelter told me to give him to adjust to his new home). Maybe it was the fact that I was trying to adjust, too. Maybe we were too much alike.
For some reason, his stuff (except for the tennis balls - he wouldn't go anywhere without two stuffed in his mouth) got tossed in with all of my other unpacked boxes. I guess I didn't really think he'd need all his old stuff, that I'd get him new things once he settled in. but it became pretty clear pretty soon that he wasn't going to.
I tried the normal commands the shelter told me he knew, ones like "sit" and "stay" and "come" and "heel," and he'd follow them - when he felt like it. He never really seemed to listen when I called his name - sure, he'd look in my direction after the fourth of fifth time I said it, but then he'd just go back to doing whatever. When I'd ask again, you could almost see him sigh and then grudgingly obey.
This just wasn't going to work. He chewed a couple shoes and some unpacked boxes. I was a little too stern with him and he resented it, I could tell. The friction got so bad that I couldn't wait for the two weeks to be up, and when it was, I was in full-on search mode for my cell phone amid all of my unpacked stuff. I remembered leaving it on the stack of boxes for the guest room, but I also mumbled, rather cynically, that the "damn dog probably hid it on me."
Finally I found it, but before I could punch up the shelter's number, I also found his pad and other toys from the shelter.. I tossed the pad in Reggie's direction and he snuffed it and wagged, some of the most enthusiasm I'd seen since bringing him home. But then I called, "Hey, Reggie, you like that? Come here and I'll give you a treat." Instead, he sort of glanced in my direction - maybe "glared" is more accurate - and then gave a discontented sigh and flopped down. With his back to me.
Well, that's not going to do it either, I thought. And I punched the shelter phone number.
But I hung up when I saw the sealed envelope. I had completely forgotten about that, too. "Okay, Reggie," I said out loud, "let's see if your previous owner has any advice."...

To Whoever Gets My Dog:
Well, I can't say that I'm happy you're reading this, a letter I told the shelter could only be opened by Reggie's new owner. I'm not even happy writing it. If you're reading this, it means I just got back from my last car ride with my Lab after dropping him off at the shelter. He knew something was different. I have packed up his pad and toys before and set them by the back door before a trip, but this time... it's like he knew something was wrong. And something is wrong... which is why I have to go to try to make it right.
So let me tell you about my Lab in the hopes that it will help you bond with him and he with you.
First, he loves tennis balls. the more the merrier. Sometimes I think he's part squirrel, the way he hordes them. He usually always has two in his mouth, and he tries to get a third in there. Hasn't done it yet. Doesn't matter where you throw them, he'll bound after it, so be careful - really don't do it by any roads. I made that mistake once, and it almost cost him dearly.
Next, commands. Maybe the shelter staff already told you, but I'll go over them again: Reggie knows the obvious ones - "sit," "stay," "come," "heel." He knows hand signals: "back" to turn around and go back when you put your hand straight up; and "over" if you put your hand out right or left. "Shake" for shaking water off, and "paw" for a high-five. He does "down" when he feels like lying down - I bet you could work on that with him some more. He knows "ball" and "food" and "bone" and "treat" like nobody's business.
I trained Reggie with small food treats. Nothing opens his ears like little pieces of hot dog.
Feeding schedule: twice a day, once about seven in the morning, and again at six in the evening. Regular store-bought stuff; the shelter has the brand.
He's up on his shots. Call the clinic on 9th Street and update his info with yours; they'll make sure to send you reminders for when he's due. Be forewarned: Reggie hates the vet. Good luck getting him in the car - I don't know how he knows when it's time to go to the vet, but he knows.
Finally, give him some time. I've never been married, so it's only been Reggie and me for his whole life. He's gone everywhere with me, so please include him on your daily car rides if you can. He sits well in the backseat, and he doesn't bark or complain. He just loves to be around people, and me most especially.
Which means that this transition is going to be hard, with him going to live with someone new.
And that's why I need to share one more bit of info with you....
His name's not Reggie.
I don't know what made me do it, but when I dropped him off at the shelter, I told them his name was Reggie. He's a smart dog, he'll get used to it and will respond to it, of that I have no doubt. but I just couldn't bear to give them his real name. For me to do that, it seemed so final, that handing him over to the shelter was as good as me admitting that I'd never see him again. And if I end up coming back, getting him, and tearing up this letter, it means everything's fine. But if someone else is reading it, well... well it means that his new owner should know his real name. It'll help you bond with him. Who knows, maybe you'll even notice a change in his demeanor if he's been giving you problems.
His real name is Tank. Because that is what I drive.
Again, if you're reading this and you're from the area, maybe my name has been on the news. I told the shelter that they couldn't make "Reggie" available for adoption until they received word from my company commander. See, my parents are gone, I have no siblings, no one I could've left Tank with... and it was my only real request of the Army upon my deployment to Iraq, that they make one phone call the shelter... in the "event"... to tell them that Tank could be put up for adoption. Luckily, my colonel is a dog guy, too, and he knew where my platoon was headed. He said he'd do it personally. And if you're reading this, then he made good on his word.
Well, this letter is getting to downright depressing, even though, frankly, I'm just writing it for my dog. I couldn't imagine if I was writing it for a wife and kids and family. but still, Tank has been my family for the last six years, almost as long as the Army has been my family.
And now I hope and pray that you make him part of your family and that he will adjust and come to love you the same way he loved me.
That unconditional love from a dog is what I took with me to Iraq as an inspiration to do something selfless, to protect innocent people from those who would do terrible things... and to keep those terrible people from coming over here. If I had to give up Tank in order to do it, I am glad to have done so. He was my example of service and of love. I hope I honored him by my service to my country and comrades.
All right, that's enough. I deploy this evening and have to drop this letter off at the shelter. I don't think I'll say another good-bye to Tank, though. I cried too much the first time. Maybe I'll peek in on him and see if he finally got that third tennis ball in his mouth.

I folded the letter and slipped it back in the envelope. Sure I had heard of Paul Mallory, everyone in town knew him, even new people like me. Local kid, killed in Iraq a few months ago and posthumously earning the Silver Star when he
gave his life to save three buddies. Flags had been at half-mast all summer.
I leaned forward in my chair and rested my elbows on my knees, staring at the dog.
"Hey, Tank," I said quietly.
The dog's head whipped up, his ears cocked and his eyes bright.
"C'mere boy."
He was instantly on his feet, his nails clicking on the hardwood floor. He sat in front of me, his head tilted, searching for the name he hadn't heard in months.
"Tank," I whispered.
His tail swished.
I kept whispering his name, over and over, and each time, his ears lowered, his eyes softened, and his posture relaxed as a wave of contentment just seemed to flood him. I stroked his ears, rubbed his shoulders, buried my face into his scruff and hugged him.
"It's me now, Tank, just you and me. Your old pal gave you to me." Tank reached up and licked my cheek. "So whatdaya say we play some ball? His ears perked again. "Yeah? Ball? You like that? Ball?" Tank tore from my hands and disappeared in the next room.
And when he came back, he had three tennis balls in his mouth.

We adopted Curtis almost 3 years ago and not a day goes by that we are not thankful to have him in our lives. He is such a kind hearted and loving boy who's mission in life is to lure everyone he meets into a belly rub. When he and Morgan met, it was love at first sight and they have become the Ma and Pa of all our foster dogs. Morgan is the one who teaches the dogs how to play with manners and Curtis rules with a stern but loving hand. Here they are soing what the do best...snuggling.

Hannah update

Hi, everyone,

Hannah is doing a whole lot better. The spots of fur loss stopped a couple weeks ago. Her largest wound, which she and Cheever made worse by licking when I was at work, has re-grown skin and fur is coming back. That spot is about the side of a drink coaster.

She responded VERY well to the last bits of prescription ringworm cream and shampoo I had and some OTC ringworm creams. So the culprit seems to clearly be ringworm.

Just wanted to share the good news that she is fine.

Victory's Northwest Summer

Hi Everyone! Victory has really enjoyed her first summer as a Northwest Pup. We have been hiking, running, and playing--but more than anything Vic LOVES the water. She has become such a great swimmer (and duck chaser), and she loves going for boat rides. Vic has also become great friends with her brother, Titus, and her cousins, Edgar and Boo, who are also rescues. It has been such a huge pleasure to see her personality come out over the past months. She is so sweet and tries so hard to be a good girl, but above all else, Vic is a total goofball. She loves to sprint toward Titus at full speed and then jump over his little 6-pound frame at the last second, and she plays ball with herself by pushing the ball down the stairs and then chasing it (repeat). Harley came to stay with us for the weekend. So far it has been ROMPER ROOM, Ridgeback Style. They have played and played since I got home from work. Finally, everyone has found a nice place to snuggle in for the evening. But we are getting up bright and early to head to the trails for some exercise.

Odd Wounds on Hannah

Hi, all,

I just returned from a week away and Hannah and Cheever stayed at a local kennel. I picked them up two days ago. Today, Hannah has two odd wounds on her right flank. They do not appear to be injuries related to the kennel. They don't look like attack scratches, either.

I noticed Hannah and Cheever licking the same spot on her flank. So I investigated and what appeared to be a small red spot got very large. I pushed her fur back to see the spot and it sluffed off with the top layer of skin. So her large wound is about the size of two nickels, maybe a bit larger, now. Her small wound is only a dot. The link below has the photos. More worrisome is she has a whole patch of small bumps which appear to be similar wounds forming. Cheever does not have these bumps, so I don't think they're fleas.

Also, when I touch the small bumps, Hannah recoils.

Any ideas? I am hoping it's stress-related or due to sleeping on a strange bed or cement if Cheever wouldn't let her on the bed for six nights.

Also, they put some kind of cheap perfume on both dogs before handing them over to me, so maybe this is an allergy? I bathed them the moment I got them home because the perfume was giving me an allergic reaction.

Well look at me now 110 lbs and love to show off.. I was at the rodeo in July in Pa. an I was the biggest ridge back there. After all My forever home is a farm an I learned I can run an be free. I was the only rrus and my other family ridge is neutered too. An some of those breeder dogs was the 1st time I seen come near my Mom , I didn't know what I was going to do. So I puff my self up , held my head high an did my lion walk.. He cleared the way an strutted his stuff.. Stoney saw the lure coursing an ran like the wind made his 1st leg ... oh my !! We were not staying to do more - Being almost 9 years old in three months (needles to say I was shocked) !! Mostly afraid of the heat of the day an I know my boy was tired but ,not showing it there. Yes, he still Love's his sleep number bed .. Stoney was called the gentle gaint .. The name fits him well.. And hereing his story about his life put tears in eyes .. Just what I wanted to do- All our love to all ,

Morgan and Jack

Ok gang. It is time to put our heads together and figure out what we can do concerning Morgan's potty difficulties. Claudia and Amanda have been so patient with me and I am at my wits ends trying to figure out how to help this ole gal realize that the house is not the place to urinate and deficate! It is a REAL problem . Morgan literally cringes when I tell her it is time to go outside to do her business. Its almost as if she has decided that the house is the only place to go. Needless to say, I am at my wits end trying to figure out what the problem is and how I can help her resolve it. There is an animal behavioralist at the University and my daughter suggested that maybe we should concult her and see if she could think of anything that we have notdone. Before we do that, any suggestions that all of you could give me would be most appreciated. Claudia has been a saint trying to help me figure this out. Morgan did not display this behavior at Claudia's and Jim's. I am beginning to tear my hair out trying to resolve this issue. Morgan has come a long way, but as you can imagine, this is a BIG problem and we definitely have to find an answer to it. I crated Morgan this evening in a plastic crate while Barb and I went out to dinner. She broke out of the crate and then went all over the house and peed and deficated. Sigh. She can not use a metal crate because of her former life at a puppy-type mill. She was forced to breed for 6 years poor dear. As Amanda stated, she has come a long way since we brought her home, but of course this behavior is making it so we can't find joy in every day we are together. For her sake and mine we must find a solution. What am I doing or not doing? This really has me stumpted.

TJ and Taylor just passed their AKC Canine Good Citizen tests this week. It is almost laughable how well they 'perform'. They positively know what is expected and just show off. Then they come home and break all the rules. We are training them to be assist dogs for us--just a few basics like getting the other spouse if needed. TJ is so much better on leash and both are well socialized with other dogs. Taylorsue is an absolute shameless flirt, which is certainly better than fear aggressive. The aggression is gone and we feel it is all due to the confidence she has gained from being with TJ. TJ is doing much better with thunder and lightening. We made him a comfortable hiding place in our walk in closet (pillow and all) and he now ccomes out more and more during the storm. Just decided to give him his space and not make a big fuss and he's doing great.

Hi gang! Things are going great with Morgan and Jack, our new addition from Pensecola, Fla. The two of them act as if they have been together for years. Although Jack has also had a hard life, he is one of those wonderful hail fellow well met kind of Ridgebacks who is so happy to be here and has settled in as if he knew his ship would come in one day!

I have gotten a new camera and am learning how to send pics on this contraption. If one is not included tonight it means that I need another lesson. Give this ole gal a bit of time to learn all that stuff that most of you know with your eyes closed.

Morgan does not like it when I leave to do errands and can't take her with me. She tore up my bathroom big time, and she ripped out of the new tent crate I bought her. We have also had some potty issues with her. Claudia and Jim did not have that issue with her, lucky me! We're slowly getting on top of it though and that problem is getting better every day.

Adoption of Miss Morgan

Hi everyone. Amanda, my daughter Barb, anad I traveled to Memphis to adopt our precious new family member, Morgan. Claudia and Jim in Iowa have been taking care of her, so she had unbelievable foster parents. Mary also took care of her for a month to heal a bad bite on her back. If anyone knows Mary's email, I would love to have it so I can thank her personally for all the loving care she gave.

Morgan is 6 yrs old, she was a breeder in a puppy mill. :( She is very shy right now and I think she is still wondering how she got here. We saw Roxie our vet today and he said he could hardly wait to see her in a couple of months. She will be a different gal once she realizes that this is for real. I will try and take some pics of her this weekend and see if I can learn how to get pics on line. It is nice to know that all of you are here also loving Ridgebacks as I do. Morgan is my second RR and I adore the breed.

This will make Amanda probably throw up but I am a big snuggler, kisser, and all around mush when it comes to my dogs! There is nothing greater that snuggeling with a RR on your bed. Morgan even has a wonderful snore that lets me know she is sleeping peacefully.

Wonderful to join this group. I look forward to getting to know all of you on line.

Weekend in Memphis

Jafari, Queen, Zevin (Riley), Roadie, Logan, and Tamu had a busy weekend in Memphis.

It was quite warm outside and we couldn't get anyone to play. They preferred to rest on the bed instead.
The weekend was an eventful one- another Ridgeback was adopted and RRUS added another member to the family. I hope they will share their story soon.

Food Hound

Last week we had some work done on our home. As usual, Roadie was the family's greeter. He quickly introduced himself and checked the man out with the infamous RR SNIFF- you all know the one I am talking about ;)

The man got to work and Roadie disappeared. At first I thought he'd gone back to bed. Nope not there. Maybe he was curled up on the couch? Wrong Again. I then went out into the back yard to see if he was sunning himself. Finally I found him. BUT he was not sunning himself.

There he was sitting in the work van- EATING the man's lunch. At first, I busted out laughing then wondered how I was going to tell this man that my dog ate his meal. I simply explained that he had just had his first lesson in Ridgebacks- and the learning curve is a steep one.

Thank goodness- this man was a dog lover but obviously did NOT know about Ridgebacks and their uncanny ability to find food.

After Roadie had his mid-morning snack, he snuggled into the couch cushions for a nap.

Nala & Niblett

Hello- We decided to get Niblett a buddy and we rescued Nala. It's like they have known each other for years. Nala is such an affectionate dog and she loves my husband. For those that don't know, Niblett is afraid of my husband who is harmless. Niblett has been making great strides with Paul since Nala arrived though. Nala is silly though, she takes the kids stuffed animals and takes the eyes out, then we discovered she is taking the kids plastic animals/action heroes toys and biting the hands off! So we are in the process of making sure the kids keep the toys off the floor. We have 2 wonderful dogs and can't thank RRUS enough.

Cross-country move

I moved Hannah and Cheever from Chicago to Walnut Creek, CA, this week. Three days of 12-hour drives (but only ten today) and we all made it. They had a really cramped area since part of the back seat had a box and pillows, too.

The dogs were great. Hannah slept the whole way and Cheever alternated between sleeping, sitting up to watch the scenery (he really, truly watches it and tracks unique features), and sneezing on the side of my brother's head.

So I learned one thing the hard way today. Don't give dogs pork rinds and beef sticks as treats. Literally, they each had four (small) pork rinds and one (small) beef stick, but combined with the changes in pressure in the Sierras, that made for some awful moments.

The dogs did well in the Motel 6s where we stopped (North Platte, NE, and Elko, NV.) I didn't know how they would like new beds and places, but aside from a few barks the first night when people walked by, nothing.

But here's the new problem: One of my roommates here has a pug. My dogs (which are more than four times Turbo's size) are scared of him. Hannah keeps hiding behind me and if Turbo is between my dogs and me, they just lie down (and bark at him if he gets too close.) He's not being aggressive, though; Turbo's just following my dogs around trying to be friends. (Hannah and Cheever are pretty elitist and don't choose to be friends with many dogs or people.)

My next big fear is that the last bedroom in this house is about to be rented to a guy with a young (six) daughter. I haven't met him or his kid and though m dogs are good with kids, they've only been exposed to kids who grew up with dogs. If the girl did not grow up with a dog and plays rough, I don't want her getting nipped.

So I'll continue keeping you updated on how we all adapt.

WARNING - 4TH OF JULY

Hi All,

Bad, bad experience today. Went to dog class and trainer said this would be a good time to find out which dogs needed special care for the 4th of July firecrackers and such. I was sitting in a chair with TJ, perfectly calm as TJ shows no concern for thunder and lightening. Well the first one went off and he was curious, the second one went off and he pulled me off the chair. I sat back down and was really ready and the third batch went off and he pulled me and dragged me along the ground. I could not let go as he would still be running and we were not that far from streets. So please don't be over-confident if you have a rescue who you have not seen in a fire cracker situation. I'm in bed with brusied ribs and who knows what else.

TJ also showed fear aggression to largers dogs and male dominant behavior. I was shocked, as was the trainer. It was just too many dogs in sort of an uncontrolled setting.

NEVER AGAIN! We will continue to socialize him on our block where there are plenty of dogs but he will not see a dog park unless things obviously improve.

He is doing well with his private lessons but today highlighted only too well areas of concern.

Cheever's DNA Results

As some of you may remember, during my unemployment, I had Cheever's DNA tested (a birthday gift.) I got his results back last week.

Cheever is all black except for a white belly with two black spots and three feet with white toes.

And his DNA results.... I'm NOT the father! YAY! Wait, that's not what the test was for.

I was totally unprepared for this. I thought for SURE... I was 100% CERTAIN he would come back a lurcher (sighthound mixed with non-sighthound.) I figured he was half greyhound.

Cheever is almost purebred DALMATIAN. An almost-all-black Dalmatian that's also almost 30 pounds and about six inches bigger than the outside of the breed standard. Based on his results, he's bout 87.5% Dalmatian and 12.5% Collie (great-grandparent.)

Also, I'm moving in here in San Francisco. I leased a room in a house yesterday and will be moving Hannah and Cheever out from Chicago the second week in June. Just the three of us in my Civic for three days. Sounds.... great?

The dogs will be sharing the house with a Pug, so that's going to be interesting. Hannah and Cheever will be fine, but if the Pug has an issue with other dogs, that could make things interesting.

Exciting News

I had to share the most wonderful news- ROADIE IS A THERAPY DOG. I received his acceptance letter in the mail today. This has been my dream for him since we adopted him back in 2007. He has such a HUGE heart that it would be shameful not to share him with others.

Thanks to RRUS for saving him- and especially to Jody, his fabulous foster mom, who chose us as his forever home.

Stay tuned for what we do next- his also has his AKC PAL# so we can participate in AKC events.

Memorial Day Weekend

Today we headed to the beach dog park- this time to meet Amali and Zari. They traveled all the way from the Midwest for a playdate in sunny FL. I think they "take the cake" for longest distance traveled for a RR playdate.

We had a total of 7 Ridgebacks in the park today. Harley, Logan, Roadie, Zari, Amali, Hudson, and Murphy all enjoyed their fun in the sun.

Amali was adopted from RRUS when she was just a pup. From what her family says even at 2 years old- she still is! They sometimes they call her- Marley after Marley and Me. If there is trouble to get into- Amali will find it.

Hannah and Cheever's Next Adventure

I was laid off about six weeks ago and yesterday was offered a new job. It requires moving from Chicago to San Francisco, but that's not such a loss. I have to leave this weekend, but the dogs aren't coming out till June.

So here are my questions.

1- I expect to drive my dogs to SF, but flying could be an option. The drive is three days. Any input into the pros and cons of driving with dogs for three days versus a six-hour flight?

2- Are there any RRUS adopters in the SF Bay area? I'll be living in Walnut Creek. If so, where are the good dogs parks? Are there any dog-friendly beaches on the ocean within a few hours' drive?

I just adopted Tess last Friday and am loving every minute of being her new Mom-just in time for Mother's Day! Her new name is Roux, the base of cooking in Louisiana, and I think she already knows her new name. She is so smart. I hope we will be able to make the next playdate. Roux tells me that she misses her friend Queen, they had a great time playing together.

Wow- the playdate was a HUGE success. We had a total of 10 Ridgebacks- representing 4 different states. The amazing thing was how wonderfully they all just got along. Not a snarl or growl between them- just another way we can learn from our dogs!

Common Bond

Here are three families who would have little chance of ever meeting without the common bond of RRUS.

We met in a New Orleans restaurant for dinner. Good food and great company! Can you guess what we talked about? RIDGIES!

Thank you RRUS for saving the dogs that we all adopted and also for choosing our families as their forever homes.

Hey Everyone,

I realize many of you live too far away to join us this weekend but I thought I'd let everyone know about a fun filled day at the dog park.

A group of Ridgebacks and their owners are meeting in Pensacola, FL on Saturday, April 18th at the Bayview dog park for a play date. We are all trying to get there around 2 PM and will stay until the dogs are tired! The weather is supposed to be nearly perfect- highs in the low 70s and low humidity (that's relative of course- anything under 90% is good around here!).

If you can't make it, we'll miss you. Of course everyone will have a camera. So don't worry- you can enjoy the fun through the photos.

Shady

Well its been almost 3 and 1/2 months since we adopted Shady from RRUS and there hasn't been a dull day in there. Shady really likes to keep things lively, especially when he feels that everyone has settled down a little too much. His favorite way to liven us up is to grab a squeaky toy and run circles around the couch while he squeaks. If that doesn't work he likes take crunch on a 2 liter soda bottle and flip it around in the air.
Shady has also become somewhat of a connoisseur of sticks. If you try to hand him a stick he will graciously take it and drop it the minute you turn your head. However if he finds a stick that he feels is worthy he will carry it for 20 minutes on walks and runs. And if it should happen to fall out of his mouth we can't continue until he has it back in his mouth.
Shady really loves going on walks and jogs but his absolute favorite thing is playing with other dogs, and nothing wipes him out better. We are trying to teach him to be polite when he wants to go meet another canine companion and he is learning slowly but surely. He has a joy for life that can't be matched and is happy to be around us whatever we are doing, though he would rather have us be doing something active and outdoors.
We are so happy that Shady could become a part of our family and we are even talking about getting another RR companion for all of us, we think he would even happier than he is now if that were to happen.

Update on Sydney

So after a long hard fight, Sydney had to let go. It is very hard for us right now. We love this dog so much and are having an extremely hard time right now. There is nothing that does not remind us of time spent with her or something she would do. We appreciate all of your prayers and thoughts and please continue them. We have a huge void right now and need the support. We will post up more later so that everyone understands what she went through and hope that this will help if anyone else runs into the same issue. Thanks everyone that made our adoption of her possible. Thank you Sydney for the best one year and one month that we have ever had. You truly will be missed and cannot be replaced.

Brett and I adopted Sydney a little over one year ago. Kay fostered her into the most loveable dog we could imagine. Sydney draws attention wherever she goes and everyone knows her by name. She is by far the most popular dog at the dog park! She is also the only RR around our area- RR are uncommen in NOLA. She was diagnosed with IMHA- an autoimmune deficiency- yesterday morning. She is critical right now- we are waiting for her to receive a second blood transfusion today. The reason she needs the blood is because her body is destroying the red blood cells. Sydney is in the best emergency animal hospital in the New Orleans area. Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers.

Gus has a new friend!

Marais (the one on the left) is our newest Ridgey. She mellows Gus out quite a bit. She's learning how to play (they think she may have been kenneled up quite a bit). They have so much fun together and it's great that Gus has someone else to play with. The boys love Marais. She's a major cuddler.

Hannah Update

Hi, everyone,

Just some new photos of Hannah. We went tot he dog park a week ago and had the chance for her and Cheever to run around and get some exercise. Hannah also stepped on something and is still healing from the hole in her paw and the associated infection, but is back to normal, mostly. In a couple months I'm going to know for sure what breed Cheever is because I'm getting a DNA test for him for my birthday, so that's going to be thrilling.

Vic Update

Hi Everyone,

Vic has been with us for almost six months now, and she is doing really well! This Southern lady has become a total Northwest girl--she romped through the snow all winter and now is enjoying the extremely muddy Oregon mountains and parks. She is a constant joy, always ready for whatever adventure the day brings, and I am convinced that she is the nicest dog ever. I took her for a hike this afternoon and have attached a couple pictures for everyone (especially Amanda).

Truman Update

Truman and I just wanted to say thanks to everyone who read my last post and especially those that replied to it. Truman is doing great and he is definitely loving farm life. He is also doing very well on his leash when we go for walks, he hardly pulls anymore. He is still shy around other people especially my roommate. We were watching the Syracuse UConn game a couple of nights ago and my roommate got excited and cheered a little too loud for Truman's liking and Truman bolted upstairs. I got him calmed down, but he seems to think that we are a little crazy for getting so excited about a basketball game between 2 teams that we have no connection to. I tried to explain to Truman that its impossible to explain why we get so excited over college basketball in March, I told him it's just boys being boys. I told him I didn't understand why he did some of the things he does but I know he's just being a do so some things are just best left unexplained. I think he accecpted that because he was watching basketball with us again the next night. Actually he is usually sleeping while we watch basketball but he did sit up and watch the TV when I flipped to the Dog Whisperer during a commercial. Apparenly Ceasar's gift with dogs is transferred through the TV. And for those of you that are wondering my Uncle did take down his Christmas lights, he thought it was time with Easter right around the corner. Of course reading the blog may have helped give him a little extra motivation to take them down as well.

Truman's new home

I've never blogged before so we will see how this goes. I adopted Truman on Monday March 2. He is very shy but he is warming up to his new home very quickly. I work on my family's farm and he made a new friend right away with one of the hired hands' dogs. They are becoming quite the pair. Now I am going to get Truman and myself signed up for obedience classes as soon as possible, not that he really needs them, but it will benefit for both of us. Until then we work on walking on the leash everyday and I'm trying to teach him to sit, but he just tilts my hand and looks at me like I'm crazy. I think having the classes help teach me how to teach him will be a big help. The one thing I know is good for both of us is spending a lot of time together and we are definitely doing that. I'm still amazed by the progress we have made in less than a week, when I first picked him up he cowered around me and now he comes to great me when I leave and come back. He also loves sleeping on his big pillow next to me when I watch tv at night, earlier this week he just wanted to be in his crate if he wasn't outside. I am sure that we will be making even more progress as the weeks go by, and the thought of him not wanting to sit will just be a funny memory. Here is a picture of Truman and myself, it was taking at my Aunt and Uncle's house, it was taken on Wednesday, and don't ask me why they still have Christmas lights up. Thanks for taking the time to read this, and if you didn't read it don't worry about it enjoy the picture. Oh yeah did I mention the Christmas lights are not mine they are my aunt and uncles.

Beach Bums

Last weekend the weather was fantastic and warm so Roadie, Logan, and Harley headed to the beach. There we met Hudson and Murphy (2 other RRs) for a playdate.

All the dogs had a blast splashing around in the water and chasing each other along the shoreline.

We all hope to get back to the beach as soon as our busy schedule allows!

Does RRUS have a Facebook Presence? I noticed that ridgebackrescue.org uses at least one of the MANY ridgeback group on Facebook to market their new pets. RRUS could have a group on Facebook just for adopters and one geared toward finding more eligible adopters, too.

Dog Park

Finally found a dog park in the area- well it takes about an hour to get there but it's worth it.

The dog park is on the beach- what more can one ask for. We met Hudson, another RR, at the park and the boys had a blast. Both Roadie and Logan got into water.

Bacchus has a home!

Brought Bacchus home on Dec. 27th and although very timid and wary for a while, he has blossomed and loves his new home. Thank goodness he enjoys snow, since that is all we have been having in Michigan right now. He loves all people, is gentle with everyone and has gained 6 lbs! Thank you RRUS for the gift of Bacchus who is the most loving dog anyone could have.

Bruno and She La sunbeaming

As Bruno approaches his one year anniversary with us we'd like to let you all know he's doing fine. He is a much more trusting and relaxed dog now, almost a little aggressive trying to get at plates coming back to the sink, but otherwise a big quite guy who lives for meals and walks... and long naps. Kids playing all around him don't even seem to wake him up, but rattle that treat jar lid or loudly pet She'la and he'll come running.

I've heard him growl about twice this year... trying to clip his nails, and he doesn't have a mean word to say to other dogs, even when they are trying to get all territorial with him.

He really enjoys long walks, which is the only way he hasn't ballooned up as that boy loves to eat and eat.

So basically, for a rescue dog that would run yelping if a male approached him with a stern look a year ago to the happy, tail wagging, scratch my belly please dog that he is today, I'd say that he and his adopted family are very happy that we made the long drive a year ago to meet! Thanks again.
