Jogging with dogs
Hi, everyone,
I recently ran my first 5K and a few people there had their dogs with them. So this weekend I bought harnesses for Hannah and Cheever and I was wondering if anyone has ever tried to train a dog to keep pace as a jogging companion before. If so, what mistakes should I not make and what tips do you have?
Thank you.
David

Dogs are natural at jogging if they are good walking on a leash. We have two dogs that are great joggers and absolutely love it. I do confess though that our 4 year old Ridgeback gets a little lazy if you go too long.
Good Luck!!
I have been running w/ my dog a year now- actually one of the traits I was looking for in a new dog. Roadie loved to jog so he was matched w/ me.
Since you recently trained for a 5K, just remember what you did to train yourself. Start over and bring the dogs along for the ride. Roadie used to want to run really fast until he figured out we were in it for the long haul and he needed to stay w. me.
I don't know how to get them to stay w/ you. I was lucky Roadie's foster dad took him jogging so he was ready to run when I adopted him. But I have noticed if we are walking- he stops to sniff but if we step up to a jog- he does not stop.
Please keep us all updated. Roadie and I just started a new training program as well- he will run the training runs (not the long runs) as I prepare for a 1/2 marathon in January. We are working back up to jogging after a few months off.
I also found a book on Amazon that would help you get your dog trained as a running buddy. Never ordered it- ran out of time before my last race. Roadie sat on the sidelines as I trained.
