Our New Pack Member - DUKE!

Welcome Home Duke!

Thanks to RRUS, we have added Duke (he's on far right) to our family! A special thanks to Kristi D. for meeting us halfway (Sioux Falls, SD) and for fostering Duke, and to everyone who helped get him to her!

It has been an adventure having him! My daughter and I call him "Snuffleupagus" - because he likes to snuffle - up - against - us! He's finally starting to warm up to my husband Jim . . . it's taking a lot of patience!

THANKS AGAIN RRUS!!

This reminded me of a rescue dog my sister in law took in who was petrified of men. My very gruff father in law took to talking in a very high pitched voice around the dog until he felt more comfortable. It was hysterical to see this big macho man talking to the scared dog in a very girly voice. As long as he spoke this way and was very calm and gentle with the dog, all was well. They are good buds now.

Great pics, your family is just beautiful.

Bacari is also very nervous around men, he better but it still makes him a little on edge. Obviously patience is a MUST. Group Obedience class helps A LOT. he really started to come out of his shell. I tried to pair up w. the men in the class for exercises so Bacari would see that all men weren't bad.

Just Don't take it personally. I did at first and it made me upset. Bacari felt that and it sent him backwards. If your husband or you for that matter get upset, just leave the room, cool off and then come back refreshed. I can't tell you how many times I have screamed into the pillow so he would not hear me. I just would ask "WHY can't you let it go?"

Another thing that helps is having your second dog who is confident and knows the way the home works. Lean on him as well. If you want Duke to understand, do something w/ your other dog first. He will soon start to see that his "brother" likes your husband and soon will start to trust more.

My husband spent a lot of time just being the good guy. He still does. To Bacari, he is the giver of all things good, esp TREATS!! Bacari will actually beg for food from him. He puts his head on the lap and wrinkles that forehead in true Ridgeback form- it is too cute and he normally gets what he wants.

These dogs all come w/ their own set of baggage. It is a joy to be a part of the whole ordeal as they learn to let it go.

Please keep us all updated as Duke progresses into the dog he was meant to be.

RRUS starts the healing and we as adopters finish the job.

Amanda
